Rafael Rodriguez Olivares, 77, of Belton, TX passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, in Temple, TX.

He was born on September 12, 1947, in a beautiful ranch in Ayotlan, Jalisco, México, called San Vicente, to Maria de Jesús Olivares and Jose Natividad Rodriguez.

Rafael was raised on a humble ranch called La Cañada. His family owned dairy cows, and they enjoyed the benefits of always having milk, buttermilk, and cheese. He enjoyed talking about milking cows with his mom. One of his favorite snacks was fresh tortilla pieces dipped in salted buttermilk. Besides having dairy cows, his family also grew crops such as peanuts, corn, sugar cane and jicama.

As a young man he sold clothes in Mexico and later found work in Detroit, MI, and then later in Chicago, IL at a factory. This is where his life of working in the USA and traveling began.

It was on one of his trips passing through Mission, TX to visit Tío Lupe, Tía Raquel, and cousins is where he met his wife Socorro. They got married on March 29, 1976, and in the time span between 1977 and 1990 they had eleven children. They raised their family in Belton, where his dad had settled down for work.

Rafael loved God, and took his family to church regularly. He was a faithful member to a Pentecostal church in Temple for years. For 17 years he preached and evangelized at the church, local radio, surrounding churches, and ranches in Mexico. He eventually felt the calling of becoming a pastor.

Rafael started having church services in his home, then in a small building on his property, and finally, in 2002, he founded Iglesia Misión Cristiana at 601 W. 1st Ave. in Belton. Besides starting up his own church, he also felt the need and desire to help other small churches grow. His sons and daughters served as musicians, singers, greeters, and children’s Sunday school teachers in his church. His wife Socorro was a pillar at the church and the person who made things work smoothly for Rafael in the ministry and at home. Iglesia Mision Cristiana continues today under the pastorship of his son-in-law Luis Perez and eldest daughter Ana. Socorro, his wife, continues to serve as a pillar and elder in the church as well.

Rafael believed in being fruitful and that children were a blessing from God. He was so proud of his family and loved spending quality time with them. He would say he was so proud of how united his family was. He was known for always having a disposable camera on hand. Capturing moments on camera and camcorder was very important to him.

He also enjoyed time in his yard tending to his plants and trees. His favorite place in the whole world was San Vicente ranch. For him it was heaven on earth being surrounded by avocado, banana, mandarin, lime, guava, and mango trees. He was always torn between wanting to be in San Vicente and wanting to be at home near his family. He would eat with gusto, and his favorite foods were salad and Chinese.

Rafael was known for his “radio voice”, his hospitality, his smile, his love of God, his preaching style, his love of accordion Christian music, and singing. Music was a big part of his life. He was called Rafa by family and close friends and Tito by his grandkids and great grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maria del Socorro; his sons and daughters, José Rafael, Jorge Antonio, Abel, Ana, Eloíza, Daniel, Raquel, twins Consuelo and Socorro, Rebeca, and Keren; his siblings Antonio, Jose, Arnulfo, Consuelo, Juanita, Elodia, Ezequiel, Maria de Jesus, Hector and Soledad; his grandkids Maira, Ariana, Aydan, Isaiah, Andrea, Jesslyn, Jose Luis, Juliana, Leah, Vanessa, Anahi, Elise, Alexia, Valeree, Sara, Mia, Israel, Juan Adrian, Joel, Marisa, Arianny, Royel, Elia, Esiahs, Jesus, Lesli, Ezra, Juan Antonio, Caraline, Luke, Cristiano, Alisia, Yareli, Antonio, Olivia, Jayden, Abigail, Israel, and Emilie and his great grandkids Adelynn, Camron, and Kaylee.

He was preceded in death by his mother Maria de Jesus Olivares, his father Jose Natividad Rodriguez, and brother, Enrique Rodriguez.

Obituario
