He received his BA in Bible with a minor in Psychology from Abilene Christian College (Abilene, Texas) in 1969 and his Master's Degree in Religion from Pepperdine University (Malibu, California) in 1977. At ACC he met and married (in 1968) Janet Louise Stell of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and together they had two children, David and Elizabeth. Larry served as a minister in Churches of Christ for most of his life, working with congregations in California, Texas, and Oregon. He served in youth, preaching, and family life ministry, and also worked as a marriage and family counselor in private practice and for churches. He taught for the Austin Graduate School of Theology for eleven years, and led seminars for churches and businesses in leadership, conflict, and communication throughout his career.
